Jenny asks…

Can I switch my bathroom fan and my bathroom light off and on independently?

I have a bathroom fan and light that are on the same circuit (same switch) but I’d like to operate them independently. One option is to tear open the walls and rerun the wiring. I could do it, but I don’t really want to. Anyone know of a home automation solution (like a remote switch)?

Matt Matty answers:

You might be able to figure a way to use a remote control wall switch (wireless). Two switches on different channels. It would take some electrical knowledge to wire in the outlet and plug the fan and light into separate outlets in the ceiling. Remove the light/fan fixture, install a duplex outlet (break the tab between the outlets) and wire in the wireless remote. This may still be cheaper than another wire run.

Otherwise, it’s pulling an additional run.

Here is a link to a page of wireless switches and options to do what you want.  This is a problem many people have – hope you can use the info here to find a solution.  Wireless Switch Solutions

Experience with X10 home automation/cameras?

we bought a whole lot of X10 sensors, cameras, switches etc and can’t get it to work. In ONE room all together it works, the moment you are further aprt nothings works anymore, any ideas?

Matt Matty answers:

Unfortunately, wireless cameras and a good share of wireless home automation devices are still too crude to be of any significant good.  I’ve been testing all sorts of wireless security devices for quite a while and they still have a long ways to go.  If you want wireless security, your best bet at this time is to go with a known security company like ADT.  The DIY approach is still too immature.  I have no doubt though that that will change – but not today.

You need a Smart RF Repeater Part # PSXO1 also from X-10. Doubles the range of your wireless devices.

Home Automation Gadgets

Steven asks…

Should I get HomeSeer or x10 or Insteon?

I am just diving into this home automation ground and I have some basic questions about where to begin:

I have heard of something called HomeSeer – I would it to control lights and stuff like that. How does that relate to x10 or Insteon. I thought these also came with their own software. A little confused. Should I buy HomeSeer first and then add whatever gadgets to it? thanks.

Matt Matty answers:

HI
It would be difficult to answer that without knowing what you want to control and how you want to control it. It is a good basic way to start.
X10 has been around for years and if installed properly by a professional will work fine.
It has lost its reputation by the untrained and the unwilling to learn or understand.
Insteon is a step up with similar type of installation and will have the same issues if not installed properly.
Home seer is is a software that can control your home automation from your computer and is not a necessity at all. If you are on the computer 24/7 you may enjoy it.
There is a full proof home automation system and here again it should be installed by a professional UPB gen 2. It is spendy, but it is worth it.
I wish you the best in your home automation.
