Locating An Ip Address

Chris asks…
Can an ip address locate computer user’s exact location ?
I have been using the internet for quite some time, but always afraid to go to some unsecure site. Can people locate the address of location of a used by their ip address ? kinda curious and worry. thank you so much for answering guys !

Matt Matty answers:
Yes and no… Anyone like me will only find the city and the ISP (the Internet company) that you get service from. Other than the people who work for ISP and have access to their log records, no one can exactly say where you are. Only the police, FBI and ISP company have the access to the log files of IPs in the area and their histories.
Hope this helps. One can trace the city, but not the exact location. Considering the fact that there are millions of people live in a city, they won’t be able to find you at all. But FBI and police can always look it up and find you. IP log records are at the hands of your ISP and they are protected legally under the American and Canadian law.
