Revised AirPrint Compatible Printer List

Airprint is a technological innovation that Apple introduced with iOS 4.2.  Since that time, the iOS has evolved to its current version of iOS 5.1.  With each release, significant improvements have been made.

AirPrint allows direct printing from an iPad, an iPod, iPod Touch, and the venerable iPhone.  It is a zero configuration technique– no drivers, no computer software to install. Just select the print function and away you go!

In the beginning there were only a few printers that supported AirPrint, and those were from just a single manufacturer.  Now however, the listing of Airprint-supported ink-jet printers has grow significantly. There are now around 100 Airprint-enabled printers.  The number of manufactures has increased too.  Find iPad compatible printers from HP, Epson, Sibling, Lexmark and Canon.

Not too long ago I put together a list of printers that were compatible with all the Apple hand held devices…  I’m happy to report the creation of a new and improved listing.  Find the complete list here but remember to check back again as this list is sure to continue to expand.

The list of Airprint enabled printers is as follows:

Will the HP 1018 Printer work with Macs?

Richard asks…

is the HP 1018 laser printer Mac compatible?

Matt Matty answers:

Yes, the HP1018 is compatible with Apple Macs.  However, it’s pretty pricey and there are much better choices available for the Mac.  You may also want to future proof your printer choice by selecting a printer that works with the iPods, iPhones, and iPad 2 and iPad 3 hand held devices.  Look to Mac and iPad Printer Choices for a full range of printers that work with all the Apple computing products.

Wanted – Cheap Printer For Ipad

Thomas asks…

AirPrint printer that doesn’t need computer to work?

I have an iPad and I need to print stuff from it but I don’t have a computer is there an AirPrint compatible printer that does not need a computer to work for under £100/$150/€110?

Matt Matty answers:

The three printers that are listed below do not need a computer to be used for printing from an iPad…

However, they do need to be connected to a wireless router.  You see, the way wireless printers work is that they connect to a wireless access point and the iPad communicates to that access point and then in turn the print request is sent to the printer.  The router (or access point) acts as a traffic cop.  You can pick up a wireless router from Wal Mart or Staples, or any office supply outfit.  If you are wanting to stay within a budget, get the cheapest one you can find.  There’s no need to worry about security as the only device on the network will be the printer.  Simply plug the router in, let it boot up, and then use the instructions that came with our printer to connect to the router.

Then when you go to print from your iPad, simply  select this newly added printer and you are off and printing but keep in mind that you must purchase a printer that communicates with the iPad.  These listed do just that…

HP® Deskjet 3050A e-All-in-One Printer – from 70$

HP Officejet 6500A e-All-in-One Color Inkjet Printer – from 155$

Hp photosmart d110a wireless e-all-in-one printer – from 75$

Netgear WGR614 Cheap Wireless-G Router – around $25

Matt Matty answers:

Your printer must be an HP printer with ePrint. There should be an ePrint logo on your printer that looks like this: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/images/eprint_icon_tcm245-908160.png

Here is a list of the capable printers (go to bottom of page): http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/airprint.html
